We only have one guitar with a zero fret, the Hofner.

The nut determines the strings spacing but the zero fret determines the height of the strings above the frets. The strings lay on the zero fret and height will be adjusted by filing or replacing that fret.

On instruments with zero frets the scale length is measured from the zero fret to the saddle as opposed to the nut to saddle.:bh

Spose, do you notice any wear on the zero fret of your Hofner? I have 2 Steinbergers that I bought used, that have notches worn in the zero fret. I'm not sure if it's from wear, or poor set up.

The other thing to note about zero frets is that the tone is more consistant between open strings and fretted notes.

The Zero fret is a conspiracy by Europeans, and I think Gretsch.
When I find out what the conspiracy is, I'll let you all know.
