I do not own an acoustic but it is definately my next purchase.
I have been trying both at my local shop. It just seems much more comfortable to hold the 000-28.
Is this the main purpose of this guitar? Make it a bit more manageable.
The D28 seems quite large. You almost have to stand it to play.
Any thoughts? I would hate to make a mistake and get the 000-28 for the wrong reason. My dealer says that he sells more Dreadnoughts than Auditoriums but that they are easier to hold.

Originally, Martins prior to 1932 were smaller "orchestral" size instruments. I believe the 000 size was the largest guitar by Martin prior to 1932. With the introduction of the "dreadnaught" size in '32, Martin created a larger-volumed guitar for band conditions. As fate would have it, country and later, bluegrass, music styles adopted the dreadnaught for the volume reasons first.
I'd select a guitar that suits your needs. The 000-28 is on my list of wants, however, I play bluegrass and country mostly, which suit the dreadnaught bodies better, to me. For a short while, I owned a 000-15S, all mahogany flat top. Very, very nice and cheap. hank
footnote: Martin actually made dreadnaughts prior to 1932 for a marketing company. They were labeled Ditson, and are very rare. I think it was an experiment to test the public's interest in the "new" dreadnaught size.

What is your main use for the guitar? If I was going to be doing more fingerpicking then strumming I would get the 000, but if you plan on doing alot of strumming I would get the D28.Either way you can't go wrong.

Thanks for the info guys. It is for strumming but I do wish to learn to finger pick. As I have said in other posts I wish guitar teachers and students would agree not to use a pick for the first year.
I find it very difficult, but I have overcome obsticles before and this should be fun.
I have to make a decision as to my next gear purchase. It is going to be either the Marshall TSL 122 or the Martin. I can't get both!!!

I went shopping for a new Martin about 3 years ago. I went to my dealer and played about 18 different guitars and came away with a new HD28. But the 000-28 was a close runner-up. The Clapton 000-28 was really nice, but the HD28 had what I was looking for in a Martin.
Now 3 years down the line, it sounds better every time I play it. I have owned a couple of dreadnought Martins over the years but hadn't owned one in a decade. This new HD far surpases any of the '70's Martins that I owned. Martin is making some really nice guitars these days.

I like the balanced tones and the ergonomics of the 000 and OM models. I have an OM-18V that is a cannon. It's handles heavy strumming just great.

The first one I looked at was the Clapton, but $$$$$$$$$. Too rich for me. The wood was fantastic on it though.

I was trying the D28 and the 000-28 again this weekend.
I don't think I could hear any difference between the 2. Maybe the D28 was louder.
You mentioned that the 000-28 is more for finger-picking but there is no reason not to use it as a strumming guitar, no?
I just like the size better.
Your thoughts sir! Thanks

Yes the 000's can be used for strumming and should be, I always like the 000's for fingerpicking because they seem more balanced sounding imo. Both good guitars for whatever style you want to play.

One of the things I definitely like about the 000's and OM's is that they are more ergonomically friendly.

Good porch swing and couch guitars.

Well, after playing both again I like the 000-28 better.
Now, will it be the Martin, the TSL122 or upgrade my 2001 LP Std.+ to an R8?
Wish I could afford all 3. Dear Santa, I have been very very good this year. ( If any of my family is lurking).

I don't think your family is lurking, therefore be prepared for socks and a sweater this christmas.
