with the nut recut, frets crowned & dressed, and the tonation set up, the tech threw as set of wound 3rd strings on.
JEEEEEEEZUS! what a difference. better clarity and intonation.

i could not get a set of wound 3rds on wednesday and figured i just get a set of Brite Wires (10 - 46) like i used before the guitar was worked on. no big deal.

JEEEEEZUS! what a difference. horrible intonation, gangly and harsh. usually i just slacken the old strings and carefully cut them about mid string to remove. for some reasson i happened to completely unwind the g. i NEVER do that. did not even think about it.

long story short - put the "old" wound g back on and the difference is amazing. even though the old string is 3 weeks old (an eternity here where even plastic rusts) it is alive enough to surfice until my order for new strings arrives.

so, who uses wound 3rds and what brand & gauge?

i am going to try the D'Addario 10-46 & 10-49 and see what happens.

I use wound G's on my electrics.

Right now, I have Gibson Nickel Plus on the Les Paul with a .025 3rd. Typically, I have used GHS....but I like these Gibsons alot.

The 175 and the Hofner both have flatwounds and the 3rd is a .026.

My acoustic I use the Elixir Nanowebs with a wound G .024

I like the wound G's better too. But I thought that was just me because I play mostly rhythm.

AMEN to that. i complain when a 3rd is 22 or greter. i do like those in the 17 - 19 range.
when i noodeling a bit of lead i noticed how DEAD the old srting is compared to the rest. but if i chord anything that ol' dead G comes alive and fillsout quite nicely.

Back in the day I got into heavier strings when I set up a guitar for slide and then played it as a regular guitar. My favorites were the long discontinued Gibson Sonomatic 340L-if I recall correctly the gauges were .011,.012,.019w,.028,.042,.054....earlier versions used a .056 bottom E string.
Since they stopped making those I occasionally used Dean Markley medium electric, custom sets by Vinci(pre Washburn),and custom gauged GHS gauged .0101/2,.012,.018w,.028.,.042,.052...sometimes subbing .020wound strings. The main catch to using a wound third is that modern srat pickups are compensated for plain G strings and certain manufacturers wound G strings don't last past the first bend(probably a core size issue?).I've had no problem with the GHS Boomers custom sets.

I started using a wound 3rd years ago on my Les Paul and really like it. For my strat and tele I'll stick withthe plains though.
