Back in the 1980s the Kentucky brand of Mandolins made in Japan built several Manolas and Mandocellos. These were scroll style instruments copied after the Gibson H4 Mandola and K4 Mandocello. I think they were referred to as the "Dawg" line and David Grisman was involved in the project, possibly supplying the reference instruments to the builder in Japan.
Lowell had two of the K4 Mandocellos on his site about two or three years ago, both have since sold.
I'm itching to get another scroll mandocello after selling the Randy Wood K5 a few years back. I'd like to find an original K4 but have also thought about having David Dart build one for me.
Any info on the Kentucky K4s or on Dart's mandocellos would be appreciated.
