Thanks, Tom. The prototype was the first example of what became a special run of short scale AJs. It's my favorite guitar because it plays great, sounds great, and holds a lot of sentimental value for me! :wail

That's cool, I like rare stuff the cutaway in my pic is a Firebird Custom Acoustic they only made 5 with the cutaway, or so I was told.

I love that Firebird Custom. I've only seen one other, but it wasn't a cutaway. Cool stuff you got there!

Hi Sliding-tom! I too love the regular AJ. Great tone and amazing projection! The shortscale AJ has very similar character to the regular AJ, but it's much sweeter sounding. The thing I love most about the shortscale AJ is the comfort of the short scale and the tone of the AJ bracing and body. I've set it up with really light gage strings, so it's a real treat to play!

Sorry guys I haven't been participating lately here at the Wah. I also have been neglecting my acoustics. Selling/trading many actually and getting more amps (blasphemy!).
But good news! I couldn't bare to be without a wood body flatop so I got a new J45! A 1998 that looks new and unplayed. This year does not have the pickup under the bridge (I like that). I still want to install a bone or ivory nut and saddle, but it sounds very good as is.
I leave it out all the time and make sure to play everyday. Even if it's just 15 minutes on the acoutic. I think it helps my hands too as I've noticed the 11's on my R9 don't seem as stiff anymore!
Here it is from the store photo (home photos soon):

The red in the sunburst isn't that red in real life, I had hoped it would be, but maybe it's the lighting used at the store. I'm getting use to the darker sunburst color but really like the sound and playability. Very blusey, smokey sounding dark bass and crisp highs. It's about 1 3/4" nut width and fingerpicking works very well. I tried it with a slide a few times and it works great--the acition is about medium.

Beautiful guitar, sinner! I just love that Gibson round-shoulder body shape. What do you string it up with?
sinner
09-25-2006, 01:30 PM
I'm pretty sure it's got the original factory strings, like gibson 12s, they're big and a bit tough on the low end but very bending on the high strings. The guitar must be a NOS from '98 I'm thinking, no playwear at all. Really enjoying playing this!

Great looking Guitar Sinner, I have never owned a round shoulder but I played one in a store this weekend and it's got me thinking about one.
Don't tell my wife I am not allowed to think about anymore guitars for a while.

It is very nice, thats for the comments guys! Right now I'm tuned down to Eb. It's a little easier on the fingers with the fat strings. But the guitar sounds very dark this way. Actually, it's very nice for blues, it does the Lightnin' Hopkins and Scrapper Blackwell thing just great! But I really got it for more song writing and singer/songwriter stuff where traditional sound for strumming is best. Maybe lighter strings will work, or I'll just get used to it the more I play it. Wish me luck!

That is a Firebird Custom Acoustic, they make them in limited numbers in the non-cutaway and I have been told that there only 5 of them in cutaway but I can't confirm that. Here is a link to Gibsons page about them.
