Dave,
I just joined and saw your post. I own a Gruhn designed D-66, model number listed as the last one made in 1985 KD100162. The D-66 was made from 1984-1986. In 1987 the name was changed to D-60. The Gruhn design can be spotted by the slotted diamond inlays. They are regarded as some of the best Guilds ever made.
I recommend "The Guild Guitar Book" by Hans Moust however it only covers Guilds from 1952-1977. Book 2 is being compiled and lots of us Guild owners are anxiously awaiting it's publication. Hans is correcting the "Dating" charts as part of the second book.
"Lets Talk Guild" http://www.letstalkguild.com is an excellant forum of Guild owners and many of your questions can be answered there as well.
I love my D-66, the best guitar I have ever owned for sure.
Congrats on your 66, would love to see a pic if you have one.

Wow, just stumbled onto this. That's my Guild! KD100054 I love this guitar. Got it at Guitar Center in Hollywood. It was a 'new' demo, still on the display rack from the NAMM Show, with two or three of it's "sisters." ;-) I believe it was the only one without light strings and I just fell in love with that warm tone. Still my fav. Great to see that pic! jg
