haw haw..

Hey everybody, just wanted to drop in and say Hello..
for now, I gotta read all your stuff first, then I will see if
there is anything left for me to say..lol

nice forum, good place for acoustic guitar stuff, huh..

I have some cheep knock off (daughters playthings..) stuff
and a HoF edition 91 LesPaul GT, and my sweetie a recent
year D-28 I think its a 99..maybe a 98. That's it in my avatar.

hey check this out..

true story:

'How honest are you?'

My name is Owen Crosby, I live in central Florida.
A few years ago, between rehabs (j/k) my wife decided to
surprise me by making my mind up for me on purchasing
a Martin. So, we have a 'loose' agreement to surprise each other, (the whole family actually) on birthdays...as you can imagine, this gets tougher and tougher...every year.
So, I had busted my can all day, and here comes the mother-in-law, the kids...my Mom..(83) etc...
so one of the kids goes next door, and comes back with MY D-28... :nicholas

WElllllll...about two weeks later, my habit of checking the papers, I see a Martin 1937 for sale for 1500 bucks...yeah, right.
I call the lady, she had rec'd a phone appraisal from a local shop, and they said "without you bringing it in...all we can say is it's worth 1500" So she put it in the paper for that.

so my wife and i drive out to the mobile home retirement community where this lady lives, and it turns out her husband of thirty years had died, and the guitar was a closet ornament.
She was 20 years his junior at the time of their marriage (you go, son) and she was around 65 years old...

She explained they she needed the money for property taxes and living expenses...she was visibly shaken about money.

I whipped out my wallet, and looked for my cheatsheet...you thought I was gonna say money, dint you...haw haw..

I could have bought this guitar for 1200 bucks..np. It was not however a 1937 double o, in fact it was a 1932 double. It had a little scratch on the back in the shape of a D R (her hubby's initials) other than that..it was original, with a set of Wurlitzer
guitar strings and a 'How to play guitar' booklet by Martin in the original case.

How honest are you... :wha?

Personally, I wanted to rip her off, but my wife talked me out of it. Hey man, I don't want anybody ripping her off when I am dead.

I called my cousins husband who is ...works for ...I better not say.

He flew down that week and gave her a fat check for the ax.
That was the agreement, I'll tell you where it is, if you don't rip her off...She called me and thanked me crying.

I wish I woulda done it..sometimes..when I see all the nice fiddles in the registry, etc...

Oh well, I have a couple nice guitars, thats enough, I prolly don't deserve them.

I like to play slide, but I am not above a little Neil Young or
Dylan once in a while...

Hi csason! A Hearty Welcome to the Cafe Wah! :ola
As I can see, your Martin is not an all-gold? :lol
That's a nice heart breakin' story. If you'd ripped that lady off you'd felt guilty every time you picked up that ol' Martin, wouldn't you? :wah
As you are being honest, what's (j/k) - sorry, I'm german and I'm not into all the fine points of American English and I'm a curious guy!
This place here is a little sleepy but me and a couple of other guys are trying HARD to wake it up. We have a lil' ongoing chat here where everybody seems to meet by the title of " Come on in.... etc." Check it out and you'll know what's been happening lately. Hope to see you post here once in a while and talk a little bit. :wail

hey Tom..j/k = just kidding..about being between rehabs..lol

yeah, you're right, bud...I looked at her last night and said
"We should have bought that guitar"...she just looked at me, and shook her head

prices have gone so crazy...I have done some stupid stuff, but
I just didn't think things were gonna get like they are..

Those 'old' guitars, were just that...old. Oh well. C'est la vie

Must've been between rehabs of acoustic guitar GAS and electric guitar GAS! :spose
Well, anyway - good to have you here! Most of the guys who check in here do that mostly on the weekends - everytime I check for "New Posts" during the week it says : " Sorry - No Matches" and I don't need matches - I've got a lighter! :stone
j/k: learned something new today!
Now just don't drop out again like so many others have done, let's get this place going - can you imagine that the LPF was similarly slow when it started? :)spin

What time is it in Germany? Is it tomorrow there already--you can tell me the racing results! It's 12noon here in Santa Monica but LA lives somewhere between heaven and hell--where's Csason from? Where's that rehab place you mentioned? (just kidding, guys--I told you I from LA...)

yeah I live in Winter Haven, Florida..

I saw Bob Seger at Nora Mayo Hall, or maybe the Citrus Dome..
for a dollar and a quarter...when I was a kid.

Gram Parsons was from Winter Haven, as well as Jim Stafford
and a few others...

I was born in a little town called Leesburg, near here.

used to go to Daytona on the weekends too ..back in the
early 70's...but I was only 17 and up..never heard of DA tho
till after he was killed...
When I lived in Bradenton..close to where Dickey Betts was born, I knew a guy that knew him well...

anyway, yeah Im from Florida.

It's better to kick yourself in the rear over doing the right thing than losing sleep knowing you did the wrong thing. St Peter will have that Martin for you at the Pearly Gates. Welcome and thanks for joining. And congratulations to the Gators.

Tennessee - the land of Gibson, hank?
I always thought, the original l.o.G. is Michigan? :##
And the l.o.G. for acoustics is Montana? :##
Oh, yeah there's also Nashville and Memphis! :rofl

Hey, Owen, do ya dig Rick Vito? He played my hometown last night - small club gig, great slide player IMO! :hank

gotta be honest, never heard of him...

but that doesn't mean much, I've had my head in the sand the last twenty years, so I don't count...HAW HAW..

hey I did buy another acoustic...

it's a 1957 Gibson ES-125 TD....looks like somebody
got the old pots and bumblebees, but the p-90s are intact
as well as the rest of it..I won't know how bad the damage is
till i get my grubby little paws on it. I am just like a kid.

Iknow its not much of an ax, but it is a 57...old...hee hee

probably as close to a vintage guitar as I will ever get...

Oh, I love those! Congrats! That's a thinline, right?
Double P 90s? Great for slide IMO - not a real acoustic, though? :blush
I've always wanted to have an ES 125 TDC for slide, never could find one over here so I had to settle for a new ES 135.
Hey, we're hi-jackin' the Cafe Wah for talks about electrics! :lol

csason
04-08-2006, 02:07 AM
yeah I am pretty fired up right about now, Tom..

yes it has electrical gizmos..but it also has F holes..

I may have gotten ripped off, its a bona fide 57, but looks like lots of fingers have been into it. I just haven't seen (maybe havent looked hard enough) many older instruments that i could
afford, that I had ANY interest in.

Slide is what I had i mind..I will post pics soon.

Yep its the thinline. got it off the bay here it is

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7404967879&indexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting

you think I am nuts..I played one once, and loved it, but it
wasn't this old...

Nice one - again: Congratulations! I don't know for how much these go for but 800 bucks sounds O.K. to me. Just checked a book on Gibsons: due to the fact that these were not very popular and been faded out in '63 they're not plentiful. I wouldn't care much for replaced pots either as long as the pickups are original as they seem to be. P 90s are great for slide in my book!
