Hey everybody, just wanted to drop in and say Hello..
for now, I gotta read all your stuff first, then I will see if
there is anything left for me to say..lol
nice forum, good place for acoustic guitar stuff, huh..
I have some cheep knock off (daughters playthings..) stuff
and a HoF edition 91 LesPaul GT, and my sweetie a recent
year D-28 I think its a 99..maybe a 98. That's it in my avatar.
hey check this out..
true story:
'How honest are you?'
My name is Owen Crosby, I live in central Florida.
A few years ago, between rehabs (j/k) my wife decided to
surprise me by making my mind up for me on purchasing
a Martin. So, we have a 'loose' agreement to surprise each other, (the whole family actually) on birthdays...as you can imagine, this gets tougher and tougher...every year.
So, I had busted my can all day, and here comes the mother-in-law, the kids...my Mom..(83) etc...
so one of the kids goes next door, and comes back with MY D-28... :nicholas
WElllllll...about two weeks later, my habit of checking the papers, I see a Martin 1937 for sale for 1500 bucks...yeah, right.
I call the lady, she had rec'd a phone appraisal from a local shop, and they said "without you bringing it in...all we can say is it's worth 1500" So she put it in the paper for that.
so my wife and i drive out to the mobile home retirement community where this lady lives, and it turns out her husband of thirty years had died, and the guitar was a closet ornament.
She was 20 years his junior at the time of their marriage (you go, son) and she was around 65 years old...
She explained they she needed the money for property taxes and living expenses...she was visibly shaken about money.
I whipped out my wallet, and looked for my cheatsheet...you thought I was gonna say money, dint you...haw haw..
I could have bought this guitar for 1200 bucks..np. It was not however a 1937 double o, in fact it was a 1932 double. It had a little scratch on the back in the shape of a D R (her hubby's initials) other than that..it was original, with a set of Wurlitzer
guitar strings and a 'How to play guitar' booklet by Martin in the original case.
How honest are you... :wha?
Personally, I wanted to rip her off, but my wife talked me out of it. Hey man, I don't want anybody ripping her off when I am dead.
I called my cousins husband who is ...works for ...I better not say.
He flew down that week and gave her a fat check for the ax.
That was the agreement, I'll tell you where it is, if you don't rip her off...She called me and thanked me crying.
I wish I woulda done it..sometimes..when I see all the nice fiddles in the registry, etc...
Oh well, I have a couple nice guitars, thats enough, I prolly don't deserve them.
I like to play slide, but I am not above a little Neil Young or
Dylan once in a while...
