best way to put a strap on an acoustic?

......I think I remember reading that it's bad for the neck to have a strap tied to the headstock ( hanging stress not good for it combined with string tension?)

is it best to just drill & put a knob on the back of the heel?

found one here on the rock about 1 1/2 years ago. retired the shoelace with the BIG knoe tied in one end. always afraid the guitar would do a nosedive unexpectedly.
love the quick release and at least the feel of added security.
