All,
I've been thinking about buying a new Martin DX1. Are there any owners here who can comment on the playability and sound quality of these guitars, especially when compared with an HD-28?
Thanks,
Eddie

Playability will be similar, but the tone will not. If you want some more information, I would check over at the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum (do a google search for UMGF). They have a lot more experience with the different models than I do.

Hank Iz The Martin Xpert.......... He Can Tell You All You Need To Kno About Martins..
Well, 'ole hank'll wade into this. For the money, the DX1 in quite incredible. Is it an HD-28? Nope. But it's is amazing.
As fate would have it, I took a DX1R in on trade a few weeks ago. My "good" Martins haven't come out of the case since. I'm just enjoying the quality of that "cheap" guitar.
One of the best things is that you can have a picnic on the back of the guitar, wipe it clean, roll it over and play the heck out of it. The perfect picnic guitar.
Highly recommended.

One of the nicest things about the X series are the stratabond (real wood fused with polymer and then CNC cut and finished). Stratabond is bulletproof.
The new X guitars have morado fretboards (Bolivian Rosewood) rather than the synthetic Micarata.
The HPL sides and back willl not project like a 100% wood guitar but the DX1 still sounds like a Martin. I used to have a DX1; great guitar. I now have the D12X1 (12 string) and a OOOCXE (OOO with a Fishman Sonicore 4 in it.)
The DX1's are best bets at $500. Super easy to play, very durable, nice tone, they hold value. Good guitars.

I have been playing the D12X1 12 string at the store several extended times. In the same room there were (not sure of the models) a used & a new Martin 12 string.
I know each guitar will vary within the particular models but the D12X1 beat the crap out of the others hands down for playability & projection.
A freind has a DX1 & I like it just as much as the 12 string.
For $549. this would have come home with me but for the wife factor.
Someday I will get one of these & life will be a picnic.
(If my wife heard the 12 string she wouldn't want me to ever play anything else).
