Hello,
Archtop.com says the L4s (at least those from the late 1920s & early 30s) with their round sound holes and 16" lower bout, play more bass than other archtops of this size; and yet because they are only 16" they do not have that dark bass overlay to their midrange notes that I hear with a bigger guitar. I heard one sound sample on the net last year which confirmed this but it may have been an oddity. I would like to buy a cd which features this guitar. Does anybody know of one? A recording made in the fifties, sixties or seventies might be more likely to show the true voice than would an old wax cylinder or 78 transcription, but I would welcome any recomendation.
Thanks, Brian

why yes i do-and its bloody amazing

-Tone Poems volume 1 -features tony rice and dave grisman-it is a collection of insturmentals-each featuring legendary guitars-l-4, l-5, d'angelico, stromberg, etc and similarly drop dead madnolins-it has a wonderful booklet describing the insturments and giving hsitory
Tone Poems volume 2 is more of the same- i preferred 1 but will probably buy 2 as well-grisman and a different equally amazing guitarist

but wait theres more!!!!

Tone Poems vol 3 featuresresonator instruments-and thsi too is drop dead, simply becase it not only show the insturments but the breadth of applications way beyond youre Son House type of delta blues

what is so cool is that youve heard of all these collector instruments and now you can actually hear them,
