Hey ev'ryone. Just signed up here in case you hadn't noticed. Some of you might know me from one of those other forums, there. Anyhow, I found a half decent '57 LG-1 in a shop today. I played it and it sounded nice and felt good. Looked good too. Problem is, i don't know a thing about these guitars. Whats the general consensus on them? Is $900 CAD a fair price for one? Could someone relate their experiences with them?

Really any info at all would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot. :ola

Hey Nazz, how 'ya doing? You know it's pretty quiet on this Wah side of things (I'm trying to stir things up a bit, but it'll take time), so maybe try posted this over at the Les Paul Forum under Other Gibsons and you were get many replies and advise from folks who know this model much more than I. I can say I do like the small body Gibson's, especially for blues ala Robert Johnson. This has to do with the bracing and more midrange tone. They did go to a stupid plastic bridge on these (around maybe '65?) so your 57 may not have that, may not matter if you like the way it feels and sounds I always say. I don't know the price conversion for Canada, but check out GBase to get some comparisons.

Expect a bluesy, mid-range weighted, ladder-braced voice; with a strong volume, and some great trebles. 24.75" scale, 1 9/16" nut.

Thanks Sinner! I'd post it on the LPF, except that my account never got fully activated. It understands i'm a member, but i still can't post anything. Its been that way since i registered (sometime last year). Maybe i'll shoot Lily an e-mail.

Yeah do that, Lily can fix you up--you're missing lots of fun and info over there, but be warned--if you don't already have a roomful of Gibbys you soon will want to!

If its VERY decent, I think that thats an OK price. I have an LG-0 (1960) that only cost $200-something in 2001. Generally, they have always been "unsung" guitars - I dont think they've jumped up in price recently, have they?

LG's arent really 'very' loud, but the ones I have had offered EXCELLENT sustain, and really fine tone. I noticed the other day that if my friend sits ten feet away with his Martin D-35, then my LG-0 completely drowns him out, and i cant hear anything he's playing... So the LG isnt really "quiet", either!

That's a decent price for an Lg. I just picked up a 56 for 650 but needed a refret which put another 200 on the price. It is one of my favorite guitars..

I see this thread is a bit old but I thought I'd add my two cents worth as I came across it looking for info on where to buy a hardshell case for my 1952 LG-1.

I bought this guitar last summer (2007) for $400.00. I had to have the tuners replaced as the buttons on the originals were disintegrating and also had to have the bridge worked on. Other than that it is in great condition for a 56 year old guitar. Cosmetically it has the usual scars and marks of an old guitar but structurally and functionally it's in very good condition. And it is one of the nicest playing acoustics I've played. Sound-wise it is very balanced, the bass being good for a smaller body guitar. It's no J45 or Hummingbird and I know these guitars are don't get get good reviews everywhere but I'm happy with mine.
