A few years ago I bought a kit from a guy, I think he told me it was a D-18 but it’s got Brazilian Rosewood sides and back. The strip that glues between the two back halves is what Martin offers in their custom shop called “Style 41/45 Mosaic” The top looks to be spruce tightly grained and exactly quarter sawn..
The neck is also exactly quarter sawn and is mahogany. I think the fretboard is wrong and unfortunately already glued and fretted with the truss rod installed. It is a bolt on neck, for some unknown reason I would prefer a dove tailed neck and block. I’m either going to have to pop the finger board off or redo the whole neck fingerboard assembly, depending on the type of glue it was assembled with. The finger board looks to be rosewood and not long enough to cover the top of the sound hole strip laminations. I’ve already inlayed a fingerboard and peghead veneer that could be used on this neck but I would have to build up the neck width with binding to make it fit, see the inlay http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=87&subpageid=39401&ck=&uzip=33030 . It has hardware including tuners marked with “Martin”.
I’m not familiar with the type of kits Martin has offered in the past but I’m guessing it is probably a D-28, except for that back strip which throws me off a little.
I’m going to make this guitar and not try to copy Martin too closely but it is what it is and having knowledge of it’s intended model style could help at some point down the road.
Any input would be appreciated.
