Hello all. I rarely post over here in Acoustic Land and in fact have not posted since my stirring and controversial "D-15 Action" thread a while back.
I am about to get a new bone bridge and nut for my D-15 but before I do I want to try several other types of strings (for better comparison after the upgrades). I have always used bronze/steel strings(Martins of late). I love the brassy tone. I have been curious to try all steel/nickel or "Silk and Steel" strings. I was curious if anyone could offer up any experience with different string types on an all mahogony guitar like my D-15. I have been very satisfied with the tone I have been getting with one exception. The low E string sounds a bit muddy - that frequency seems to get "lost" when chording. I am aware that it may be the existing nut/bridge but I was also curious to hear how a steel (vs. bronze) low E string sounds on this guitar before the upgrade. I plan on picking up a couple/few sets tomorrow. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

I'd just try out different sets until you land. The muddiness in the bass can be reflective of old strings in combination with the all-mahogany construction. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Just a quick follow up. I just got back my D-15 with it's new bone nut and saddle. I am very pleased. The low E string problems have been resolved. I now have an even brighter toned guitar. I plan on experimenting with different string types but for now I keep coming back to bronze strings (Martin 80/20's). I still prefer the feel of all nickle strings and will seek a compromise between the warmth of nickle and the brigtness of bronze.
One other pleasant surprise was how well this guitar sounds with a capo.
The new saddle has really opened up the tone and volume.
