Not being up on used acoustic guitar prices I was wondering if someone here could tell me if $900 sounds reasonable for a '73 Hummingbird?
I've been hoping for a decent price on a Martin D-28 to come along but haven;t seen anything under $1400. Figured the Hummingbird might be worth checking out. Any comments on them? Should I stay away from the 70's Gibby's?

Blue Books show them topping out at around $1100 in excellent condition. Street price is usually a few hundred below. The general opinion is that Gibson acoustics were overbuilt during the 70s to help cut down on warranty work. Most of the 70s models I've seen seem to offer good evidence of this trend. Each guitar should be evaluated on its own merits but in general, this wasn't one of Gibson's golden eras.

Thanks Fripperton! This is the second 70s Gibby that I've come across and been tempted by. Anytime I see a "Classic" acoustic under 1K I start chomping on the bit. If I didn't just buy a bass the other day I would have went to check this one out.
I should know better than to keep looking at classified ads and ebay when I can't afford something. :bonk

Lately i've seen where books don't matter. so if you like the guitar buy it..
especially a 31 year old Gibson.. i'm sure you will love it........

Don't do it. Its VERY true the 70's flat tops were overbuilt by Gibson to avoid warranty claims. The woods are still nice but the bracing is HEAVY and EXCESSIVE!! Its tonally dead compared to the 60's H'birds. You're better to spend the money on a new Montana built H'bird..........these are as good or better than the 60's vintage birds.
Its true you must evluate each guitar on its own merits and not make grand statements about a guitar strictly according to the year it was built......but these are DEFINITLEY overbraced!
Just because something is old doesn't make it great. 31 year old Gibsons can be duds. Quality doesn't improve with age.
