I have tickets to go see Jackson this evening. He is playing a theater at a casino in Biloxi, MS. I've seen a few shows there and it is a wonderful venue for live music. I'm really looking forward to it and I'll post a report after the show.
I've been listening to Jackson's greatest hits disc a lot this week and I've found that I'm really enjoying some of his middle period work w/ Rick Vito on guitar. I never realized he was the guitarist on those tracks and listening to them now I am floored at all the wonderful parts he came up with on those songs. I'm a huge Lindley fan and for the last few years I've mostly listened to the records that he is featured on (Saturate - Hold Out).
I have a feeling that tonight's show will be Jackson solo, but I'm not posisitive. Band or not I am really looking forward to seeing one of my all-time favorite songwriters.

I grew up with this guys faux sensitivity...and I bought it! That said, his Darrell Hannah episode brought it all home! I blame Nico!

I've seen him twice-once with his band and once unplugged-both were great!

Sorry I am a couple of days late with a review. The show was Jackson solo, just him, eleven acoustics and a piano. It was truely an incredible show, that easily places in my all time top 10.
He was playing mostly Gibson acoustics, a mix of new and vintage. Notable exceptions were a gorgeous Martin D4* style in sunburst and what appeared to be an old Gurian that he used for a couple of fingerpicking tunes ('These Days' and one other).
He played in open tuning for more than half the set, primarily in D tuning with different capo positions. All the guitars were plugged it and also mic'ed with a condensor. The mic was providing most of the house sound. You could really hear the difference at one point when he stood up and walked away from the mic.
A couple of interesting points, he played 'Bright Baby Blues' in G tuning with a slide, an interesting almost delta blues approach. He played 'Running on Empty' with a recent Gibson model with a pickup in the neck position. kinda like the 'Beatles model' but w/ a cutaway. He played it in a G-type tuning (maybe A) and ran the pickup into a Fender blonde head/cab (maybe a Bandmaster ) and used the tremolo. Interesting sound.
He played Zevon's "Poor Pitiful Me" (he said his goal was to play a different Zevon tune every night on this tour) and Jesse Winchester's 'Biloxi' (complete with a lyric sheet he pulled from his pocket. The show was in Biloxi, MS)
Overall he was very relaxed and personable, taking requests from the crowd and chatting a bit about the tunes.
He played just about everything I wanted to hear (with the exception of 'Of Missing Persons') and even kicked off the show with one of my favorites 'Barricades of Heaven'. Seeing him do 'Late for the Sky' solo on the piano was worth the price of admission alone.
In summary, it was an incredible show that I feel very fortunate to have seen.
Even if I did have to go to Mississippi to see it. :rspin

Yeah, you and Joni Mitchell. Ever heard her tune 'Not to Blame' from Turbulent Indigo? Yow!! I seriously doubt she and Jackson are on speaking terms after that one.

Thanks for the report on the show.
I would like to see him live too but I can't say that he's ever toured close enough to me.
Sounds like it was a great show.

I can't deny his stuff moved me! Late for the Sky, Running on Empty...and Saturate, pretty much was spot on with my then relationships (as opposed to my Zen) :spose

Speaking of guy shortcomings....who was (I don't remember) the writer of most of
Art Garfunkels "Watermark"....This one soothed and tortured me through my first
divorce. Great record! I percieve Craig Fuller fans here also. American Flyer, PPL
and Fuller/Kaz.....we should have all been in these bands. Jim....somebody?

Just filtering thru the site this evening and ran across this thread. I downloaded Bright Baby Blues a few months ago off of some live album of his. Guitar is tuned down a full step, then in what would be an open G, so the song is actually in F. I've recorded my Strat before in this tuning and it gives a very responsive sound. Jackson Browne's music is very entertaining, especially solo.
He's a drastically underappreciated artist, imho. :hank

I saw him years ago touring behind the "Holdout" album. What ? '79- '80. I was not impressed and never listened to him much after that except for the occassional classic rock tune. 'Running on empty' was good.

Freekflag, I think I understand what you're saying. His music is the type that you either like or you don't. I really enjoyed Running on Empty, the entire album but some of his other stuff was spotty. As far as individual songs go, I believe The Pretender and Rikki are great. However, for the most part, I really enjoy listening to Jackson Browne. Bright Baby Blues is a great song, as well.

Whoa, goofup. Not Rikki Don't Lose That Number. Hell, that's Steely Dan. I'm thinking of Doctor My Eyes. Boy, am I glad I caught that.
Sliding Tom...
Have you listened to the slide action in Jackson B's cut "Red Neck Friend". It has got to be one of my favorite JB tunes....it just drips w/ tone! Probably, David Lindley doin' it up? Good bar room brawler song...

David Lindley kills! Absolutely! He's the reason why I got myself a lap steel although I can't play it in my band (can't cover the rhythm parts on it). Which album is that on? My siszter is a big JB fan and she might have it.
Which album is that on?
I don't have the album Tom, buy it's in my music file on my 'puter. I do believe it's on the "For Everyman" Album, originally released in '73....sh*t, time flies! That was 33 years ago!

I sure do wish I could play some slide. I once saw Sonny Landreth, and John Hammond Jr...Wow, Just jaw dropping. But true, Lindley can play it all...

Sonny Landreth. Yep. Download Petal to Metal off the Grant Street album. We're quite proud of Sonny here in LA. Although he's not native, we claim him.
