Bought a very nice 2002 Luthier's Choice SJ-200 a few weeks ago. Its a beautiful looking and sounding guitar.

The dealer didn't know what the designation Luthier's Choice meant. I havn't been able to get an answer from either of the Gibsom main customer service nor Montana customer service people. The yare friendly and try their best but haven't got an answer for me.

I know that the master luthier Ren has something to do with it.

Is it the wood? The builder? ??

Thanks to any who may know.

Never heard the designation before, but it sounds like a great way to bump the price up a couple of grand. I got a J-200 last summer that was so-o-o-o imaculate.

I had a luthier look at it for a setup and he didn't have much to do. As he put it, if you had the chance to look at a hundred of these guitars and pick the one you wanted, this is the one to pick.... I love that sucker!

Nice 200!! Just love 'em....big, loud, clear.

Mine has Eastern Maple back sides neck, Brazilian Fretboard and bridge, ? Aderondack (sp?) spruce top.

I have a feeling its wood choice and then final selection by Ren.

They have also assigned thta name "Luthier's Choice" to some of the AJs.

Anyone know what it means?

It has been quiet. Are you being critical?

I believe the Gibson guy is Ren Ferguson. I hope that's right.

Keep knockin' on the door. Old hank can't carry the whole load here. Besides, hank don't know it all.

I read the article by Ren Ferguson from your link Hank but to doesn't elude at all to "luthier's choice'. I asked a local luthier here in town about this and he said that it likely means that the luthier chose the particular wood pieces for the guitar so it would have the most perfect tone, style and grain finish. Of course he was only speculating on that.

So I guess gold Tone is still not quite sure of what he has.

Fret not (yuk, yuk) Gold Tone the search is still on for the answer.

lyles, my link was to confirm that Ren Ferguson was, indeed, "the guy". I should have been more clear. hank

No, just surprised. This is a cool forum and I was hoping to see more action as I'd really like to get into it.

Sorry about my "tone". Thanks for participating. I really hope people get more involved. You're right, this is a great site, with great people and knowledge.

Thanks for your participation Gold Tone! hank :)

btw, I have a 1990 Gibson Advanced Jumbo that Ren was involved in. He's really improved the Gibson acoustic line.
