I saw David G. playing this mandolin recently on the "Grateful Dawg" DVD. A would you call that a "three point" style? Anyone know who makes it?

I believe it's a Gibson three point. Early 1900's. It's possible that it's a copy, but David typically likes the real thing.

You can search for David's Tone Poems series where he features different instruments on each cut. Each instrument is pictured, dated, etc.

You're not kidding! He seems to have a TON of them, too.
After seeing that DVD & listening to some more music: "Tony Rice Plays & Sings Bluegrass"... YOW. There's a cut on that album that really defines the term "chop" to my ears. Most definitely an f-hole. I believe the guy playing on that particular tune is Sam Bush.
I'm starting to recognize the differences in tone you mentioned in another thread concerning mandolin varieties. The Round hole mandos seem to be brighter, but lack a certain kind of "gut" that the f-holes have.
