View Full Version : Do You Like Female Vocalists?

I absolutely love female vocalists.

I know men can sing with passion but it is different when it is a woman. Maybe that's because I am a guy. :p

Anyway, I like singers like Kim Carnes, Kathy McDonald, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Tyler and also many country artists such as Martina McBride, Sarah Evans, Faith, etc.

Several years ago Laura Brannigan did a song called "The Power of Love". Whenever I play that I crank it up and it gives me goose bumps.

Anyone else into female vocalists or am basically alone here?

Tim C. :timc

I also like old Helen Reddy songs *ducking for cover* She was the first female vocalist I saw live in concert and she was great.

I am not sure what happened to Kim Carnes but I just bought her "best of" CD and it is very good.

Nelson, Bette Davis Eyes is good but her best songs were the ones the radio never played. Same with Bonnie Tyler.

Yes Laura Brannigan did Gloria, again not some of her most passionate work, but it fit the radio profile of a hit.

I can picture the Black Velvet lady but I can't remember her name right now.

I like looking at the female vocalists far more than I like looking at the male ones.

That was Alannah Myles. The album with "Black Velvet" on it came out in 1989. Ahh, I remember it well :wow
She was from Canada. She had a "Best Of" that came out in 1999. Can't say much else about her.

Love the female voice.
Don't much care for men who sing like girls though.
Now if you're giving me a choice
I'll take the Tender Gender, whether high, or whether low.

the singer in our band is female....she ROCKS!
you should hear her scream on ZEP's rock n' Roll!!

hey you guys forgot about Pat Benatar

Tim C.
08-27-2002, 10:19 AM
Yeah, Pat is a great singer. She was just here the first of this month.

Cheryl Crow and Michelle Branch are here next month but I will miss it. :(

The show sold out 15 minutes after ticket sales opened. I didn't even get a chance to get in line.

I love female vocalists! Here are a few favorites:

Chrissie Hynde
Sarah McLachlan
Kate Bush
Stevie Nicks before she wore out her voice

It's funny, as I've been doing more recording, I've been listening to the vocal effects on Kate Bush's records, and McLachlan's "Fumbling Towards Ectasy" and wanting to incorporate some of them into my tunes. There's some real creativity towards singing that's rare among male rock vocalists.

One female Vocalist that I LOVE that I haven't seen mentioned yet is Cindy Lauper. True colors is one of my alltime favorites and she has done some amazing different renditions of it over the years. She has her quirks........but I truly love her.

I also love Melissa Ethridge. She 's been out of the spotlight for a while now and I'm looking forward to her return.

Tim C.

I enjoyed Cindy Lauper as well. Actually she got fairly attractive when she got older and got rid of the wierd colored hair, etc.

I heard Dusty Springfield singing "The Look of Love" on the radio tonight and she had a great voice too.

hey, ED, those were my picks!

good taste, I like all of those girls.

never liked the blues-hollerin' or high pitch screaming rock singers though.

the girl from The Cowboy Junkies has a damn sexy voice too.

and the 3 girls who sing that gospel tune on "oh brother where atr thou" sounded great too. ( emmylou harris, allison krauss & gillian welch?) track 10.

actually, allison krauss sounds amazing on track 4 too!!

don't remember her name, but the singer for "its a beautiful day" had a nice melodic voice.

also, i'm quite partial to Coco Taylor. even at her age she can still belt out a tune. not with the force, but with the heart!!

I was just listening to Koko Taylor last night. She does some great songs, mostly old standards.

The album I was listening to had Buddy Guy backing her.

I have a video with her and BB King that is absolutely killer.

Lily sure can sing your right Nelson!

I got to see Jewel play alot, once or twice it was to me only!
She is grea, and the best I have seen in person it didn't mtter if it was a packed house or just me sippin my java she put her heart and soul into it.
I don't have her albums, or see her play these days, it just is not the same, and I am sure there are plenty of talented ladies that would leave the same impression in such an atmosphere.

I've always loved female vocalists and had the pleasure of being in bands with a few good ones.

There have been a bunch of great ones mentioned, I'd like to add Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance (and Gladiator SNTRK) and Liz Fraser from the Cocteau Twins. I know there are a bunch other ones that I can't think of now, too.

Has anybody here heard Dianna Krall?

I was listening to her tonight and she has a great voice. Slightly sultry in nature.

Yeah, I have one of her discs. She is really popular in the audiophile circles. She has a very good voice and the recordings are very well done. In the end, I always fall asleep when I try to listen to her, tho. Audio induced narcolepsy.

I'd recommend a Holly Cole album called Temptation. It's an entire album of Tom Waits songs that she covers in a jazzy style. You might dig it.
