How does the D-45 GE differ from the D 28 GE tone wise????

Nelson, you're down to "splittin' hairs" here.

They are in the same family. That's about all I could add. The original D45's from the '30's sound similar to the original D28's of the same period. Of course, only 91 D45's were built originally.

One original D45 sold last week for $189K. peacetoallhank

Nelson,
If you are still interested in these, I have both a D-45 GE and the D-28 GE. My 28 is about 2 years old now and I have been bluegrassin' with it the whole time. The 45 is coming up on its first birthday and has not been out of the house, but played quite a bit. The difference is subtle. My 28 has a deeper bass response overall. The 45 has the same bass but is matched with lush mids and treble that makes the entire package the same only more. Imagine the tone controls on the stereo with bass mid and treble all the way up. The 28 is more like the bass is all the way up and the mid and treble are turned back.
I hope this helps. I did play a couple 45 GE's before I picked this one. I think it is the best new Dred. I have ever picked up.
I also have the D-18 GE, OM-45 GE, D-28 LSV with Adi top, and a Bourgeois D-150 to compare it to at home.

doctor! Very cool stuff. I just got a new D-28GE last week. I also have a D-18GE sunburst acquired last fall. Both spank the bluegrass music that I play. Best stuff Martin's ever produced.

OK, please ........................ pics of all the GE's!? Please, hank!

Hard as it is to believe I don't have a digital camera. I am planning a new computer for later this month. I have a vintage 98 model dell and a 28K modem. All this is just a short excuse for I don't have any right now. I will post them when I get all the new gear.

I've got a 92' D18V GOM that sounds particularly good.

What do you guys think of the D42 ? Dressed up HD28 ? You gotta like the inlays.

Bobby Lee:

The D-42 is a particularly interesting guitar to me. What sets it apart from the D-41 and D-45, for me, is the forward-shifted bracing pattern. This is in the "old style", if you will.

What would be better is if Martin put a red spruce top (Adirondack) on the D-42. Then you'd be closer to the real thing.

Anyway, great guitars. hank

Hank,

That would be a nice thing. I like the old style 45 inlays along with the snowflakes on the bridge. I bought one in '96 and it is aging nicely. A "V" neck would be nice also. I've got a couple of Martins with the "V" and I really like that profile. I've seen a couple of Sunburst D42s and they got me going.
