Gee, Lily, I wonder when you're going to like someone who can actually sing so you can understand him, in tune, on time, and with a pleasant voice.;)
Eddie Vedder
Plant
Roy Orbison
Steve Tyler
Tom Waites
Tom Petty
Hetfield
Garcia
Louis Armstrong
Eric Clapton
Jack Bruce
Jimi Hendrix
Joe Cocker

Neil young is mentioned in Sweet Home Alabama because the Southern Boys of Lynrd Skynrd ddn't like the Neil Youg song 'Southern Man', which talked about the slavery issues.
At least I THINK it talked about the slavery issues- I could barely understand the singer.;)

Neil is a freaking GENIUS!!
all his brilliant acoustic stuff & his soulful electric stuff blow my mind. the guy has some serious talent.
BTW anyone ever see his stage setup? he plays through a tweed deluxe ( i think?) with this crazy robotic electronic contraption to turn the knobs, & it's hooked up to a footswitch.
I need to find another adjective for "stuff".......anyone got a thesaurus?
or are they all extinct?

I think it had more to do with his song "Alabama" off Harvest.
The boys in skynerd were big fans and vice versa. It ain't hard to understand the singer at all, diction is fine.

I saw Neil last spring with CSN. CSN were hot but Neil stole the show and they knew it. They would just grin and back away to give Neil room.

I guess i'm the closest thing to Neil Young in regards to where he's from. Winnepeg,Manitoba. A little upper north of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Canadian he is!!!!. I've hung around his High School which is Kelvin High School for the B-ball Tournament.,being that's where my girlfreind used to go.Saw his quite a lot o times. my favorite Cassette back then were the Live Rust,Stars and Bars,Zuma,Comes A Time....Lets just say all.Fave Tracks all specially LIKE A HURRICANE, my years jammin' with his tunes along with the real original Crazy Horse.Hes the BOMB IMHO for a Canadian Artist overall. Luv his Deluxe with the Bigsby which i got to try out back in mid '80s in concert in Winnepeg Stadium,Canada. Saw him jam with former Guess Who ,Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman.Deja' Vu'...CSNY also cuts deep within my roots and faves.

Are you referring to Ol' Black?
If so, actually that's not a deluxe. It's a 50's Goldtop painted black. :)

Well, I WILL say that the two are pretty well matched- they're BOTH Fooguly-Ooguly!;)
(Disclaimer: I'm only harping on Neil and his guitar because I know Lily likes them so much. Neil rocks and his guitar's got it goin' on- but don't tell Lily I said that!)

Neil, oh the memories...summer of 91 Started playing w/ a new guitar player..back in the DAZE I played alot of Bass..starts playing all this NY stuff.. I was like "ok, I dig the music...but what is up with that freakin voice?" I drank tons of beers, that summer..had some of the best jams of my life,.Listened to alot of Neil Young..and that voice ,, well now it's one of my fav's.. that is one guy who never sold out. Neil ROCKS :dude
Neil's voice is really unique. Very nasal, and he hits these highs that (to me) are beautiful. I love how he delivers his songs as well. I have a BBC tape of a performance by him when he was quite young. He hasn't really changed so much in his vox or his style over the years. (It's a GREAT show!)
It's like Dylan. I think sometimes it's just something that grows on you....or doesn't. ;)

Eddie Vedder's voice is not particularly pleasant. Neither are those of Robert Plant, Steve Tyler, Jamie Hetfield, Louis Armstrong, Jimi Hendrix or Joe Cocker. Tom Petty's voice is slightly less grating than these, but not remarkably pleasant either.
Having never heard either Jerry Garcia or Tom Waites, I can neither defend nor condemn them.
Roy Orbison is a reasonable singer, so is Jack Bruce; Clapton less so, but is more tolerable than those listed earlier.
Neil Young's voice, IMO, belongs in the "God-awful" category, right down there with Bob Dylan's, Jimi Hendrix's, and Michael Bolton's.
P.S.: I am a fan of both Dylan (as a poet) and Hendrix (as a guitarist) and I think their voices are hilariously awful.

I suppose you're right, but the funny thing is, listening to "real" singers doesn't appeal to me much. it's as if being in key all the time, with a clear/clean voice, sounds bland and lacks the emotion of someone who cracks, wavers, and slips out of key.
give me Tom Waites, Hendrix, Neil Young ( who I think took a lot of inspiration from Roy Orbison), Roger Waters & Louis Armstrong anyday!!!
I never liked Jack Bruce's singing much.....or a lot of jazz singers.
I must be the same with guitar: I always liked gtr players who hit bum notes & used sloppy technique. not guys like Al Di Meola for example.

In terms of singing, give me Nat over Satchmo any day!
Actually Nat "King" Cole was an accomplished pianist who led the King Cole Trio to fame as an instrumental group for ten years before anyone knew he could sing.
I guess Nat (and George Benson to a lesser extent) are at one end of the spectrum and Satchmo and Hendrix are at the other.

Sam,P.S.: I am a fan of both Dylan (as a poet) and Hendrix (as a guitarist) and I think their voices are hilariously awful. Given my druthers, I'll take the latter over the former. Hendrix's growl of a voice always sounded like the perfect complement (or perhaps contrast) to his Technicolor guitar playing. Dylan can be a wonderful songwriter, but his asthmatic wheeze really leaves me cold.

There are three awards I made up. There is no actual prize, just categories:
Award #1: The Jimi Hendrix Award - for singer/guitarists whose guitars sing better than they do.
Award #2: The Bob Dylan Award - for singer/songwriters whose songs sound better when sung by other people (Peter Paul & Mary, Manfred Mann... even Jimi Hendrix? )
Award #3, named for a winner of the first two: The Willie Nelson Award - for singers whose singing would sound exactly the same if their mouths were gagged with rags & duct tape...
