I've seen a handful of you all discussing the smoothness of the HD-35. I would not overlook the great tone of the D-35.
I've got a '72 and a '93. They are terrific acoustic guitars. If you are a Hedges or Reynolds fan, those guitars get you a close (and great tone).
And, I think they are less expensive than the HD series. Anyone know?
Yes, the D35 is cheaper than the HD5, by about $300 - $400 I believe. Of course, you pay more because of the scalloped bracing and herringbone trim. Both are good. hank

I bought a 2002 D-35 after wanting one for a long time. After having owned it for 4-5 months now it has easily become my favorite guitar that martin makes. I even like it more than my HD-28v. I like the nice bass response that the three piece backs provide. My D-35 does the whole deal, it sounds real chimmey and bell like for finger picking and ultra smooth for strumming. I also just noticed Martin is now making an OM-35, I imagine I will be snatching one of those someday. I actually wasn't a huge fan of the HD-35 but maybe I played a dog.

I have one that I bought about 15 years ago. I love it. It's been substantially overhauled by David at Goose Acres Music in Cleveland OH (new pickguard & bridge; new frets) and it sounds and plays great. Here is a link to a soundfile -- sorry for the spam (it's my CD!) but one of the tracks demoed ("the boy who loved trucks") is a nice example of how that guitar sounds fingerpicking solo. Definitely in the Hedges realm. (although I actually like the sound of mine better...)
