Specialty area for discussions about mandolins, banjos - the "other" stringed instruments used in acoustic music

O.K., I therefore have no compunction about this post not being about mandolins:

How easy/difficult would it be for the classical string quartet (two violins, a viola and a 'cello) to play rock? For example, how would tunes like Hotel California, Sharp Dressed Man and Back In Black sound when played by a proficient string quartet? Would they sound like rock?

Sam, to me it would sound like rock songs played on stringed instruments ............. but not rock.

I'm into bluegrass. Many people have put rock songs to bg and guess what? The songs sound like bluegrass ........... and usually watered down.
